The word ' assess ' comes from Latin verb ' assidere' meaning 'to Sit wit'. Assessment is a step by which information is obtained relative to some objective or in other terms evaluation of how much students had understood.
Assessment is considered to be the key component of learning since it helps students as well as teachers to learn. As learners are able to see how well they are doing in their course and if scores poorly ,they may begin to work hard and thus we can say assessment is important as well as it is embedded in learning process.
The concept of assessment is very old, As each student in classroom is unique and possess ability to learn. It is teachers responsibility to develop their intelligence and potentials. Assessment is an evidence of the student learning, it is designed in such a manner what students are expected to learn from teachers. Broadly in classroom assessment is done in two types: a) Collecting information about students learning and understanding. b) judging the understanding of a student.
Assessment acts as a tool in analysing the progress of a child in a particular course. It is through assessment that the habit of learning takes place in a child and the result of it motivates them to learn further.
1)Detecting Function It detects all the activities during the elevation. From making plans to estimating the results all activities are closely watched. It also helps in improving performance and achieving desired results. 2)Making Decisions They have to decide what has to be done for improvement. All the decision related to assessment has to be taken by the teacher. It helps to focus on improvement 3)Student’s Placement in the Remedial Course It means that if a student’s evaluation is below average. In that case, remedial courses should be provided for them. Furthermore, these courses will in performance improvement.
Monitoring Progress Teachers monitor the progress of their learners by collecting information about learning processes and concepts while learners are working on projects..
Feedback By providing feedback based on this information, teachers can address misconceptions and other learning problems appropriately Motivation Teacher motivate the students by encouraging them and giving a confidence.The students do the better understanding and envolve in all the activities.
Assessment is embedded in the learning process. It is tightly interconnected with curriculum and instruction. As teachers and students work towards the achievement of curriculum outcomes, assessment plays a constant role in informing instruction, guiding the student’s next steps, and checking progress and achievement. Teachers use many different processes and strategies for classroom assessment, and adapt them to suit the assessment purpose and needs of individual students. In summary, embedded assessment, which has also been referred to as ongoing assessment or diagnostic teaching, is an effective way of accomplishing a need to assess progress without compromising valuable instructional time.
