Summative Assessments are given periodically to determine at a particular point in time what students know and do not know.
Formative Assessment is part of the instructional process. When incorporated into classroom practice, it provides the information needed to adjust teaching and learning while they are happening.
Assessment is the systematic basis for making inferences about the learning and development of students. It is the process of defining, selecting, designing, collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and using information to increase students' learning and development.
Assessment means the action of assessing someone .It is the process of gathering and discussing information from multiple and diverse sources in order to develop a deep understanding of what students know .
Assessment enables to achieve the goals and objectives of the institution as well as the students. It shows the outcomes that are acquired by the students during the class.
We can add on advantages of each type of assessment. More specifically, formative assessments:
• help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and target areas that need work • help faculty recognize where students are struggling and address problems immediately.
The goal of summative assessment is to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark.
I found this on google and liked it- Formative assessments let students show that they’re learning, and summative assessments let them show what they’ve learned.
Good attempt by all. Following addition into your discussion: 1. Try to start with introduction in context to the statement 2. Connecting statement 3. Meaning and examples of formative and summative assessment which justify that "A comprehensive assessment makes use of formative as well as summative assessment." - Here justify with examples again in context of statement. 4. Conclude your answer in context of statement
Assessment of a student is done in order to examine the students achievement and what students know about the lesson they have learnt. It is the basis of effective teaching and learning process. Different modes of assessment are used for comprehensive understanding of teaching and learning. Feedback can be given immediately so as to improve the learning and teaching.
Formative Assessment is an ongoing, flexible and informal diagnostic toll.which is done between the class for the development of the students to test wether the students understand or not.while in summative assessment it is an formal, structured Soo they can mesured or compare the evaluate outcomes.soo that why before the exam all the teachers do summative assessment by giving some test or doing revision.
A learner's overall development can be evaluated through assessments. In order to enable a learner to have an overall development in the entire learning process both the formative and summative assessments acts as a boon to the learner.
Encourage students’ self-reflection - Instructors can ask students to utilize course criteria to evaluate their own or a peer’s work, and to share what kinds of feedback they find most valuable.
Give students detailed, actionable feedback - teachers can consistently provide specific feedback tied to predefined criteria, with opportunities to revise or apply feedback before final submission.
Features of formative assessment- 1)Formative assessment is the integral part of teaching and learning:-formative assessment is said to the integral part of teaching and learning as it helps teachers to identify learning needs and problems.
2)Feedback to the learning is immediate (or nearly so),to enable the students to learn his or her behaviour and understanding right away:- In many ways formative assessment also helps the learners to develop a stronger understanding towards their academic strengths and weaknesses.
Features of Summative assessment: 1) It is normally, though not always taken at the end of a unit of teaching. For example: Unit test exams in schools or cyclic tests in some schools. 2)Summative assessment is used to quantify an achievement i.e, how many marks or percentage the student has got, reward an achievement i.e, praise the students for their performances in exams and provide data for selection to the next stage( next class) i.e. whether student has got enough score to be passed and promoted to next class
3) summative assessment is formative and positive. Even when the key objective of assessment is summative it should also inform future learning. Summative assessments that serve a formative purpose are better than those that do not. Effective assessments should also be constructive, for example by focusing on success rather than failures.
4) Summative assessment should be practical and scalable:- Assessment has to be pratical in the sense of being feasible to implement. The more time consuming, expensive and operationally difficult it is to carry out an assessment the less likely it is to be used. For example within the formal education system large numbers of learners need to be assessed. The more pratical the assessment is then the more scaleable it is likely to be .
5) it is easily reported:- the key element of summative assessment is to evaluate what someone has learnt up to that point in time, having a concise summary of the outcomes of the assessment is important. For example after teaching a lesson the evaluation can be done immediately.
We can conclude that together formative and summative assessments allow students to excel in the classroom. All types of summative assessment and informal formative assessment are essential to assessing pupil progress. Both contribute towards an improved outcome from the pupils’ learning and ensure a better end result. Overall, a comprehensive assessment program balances formative and summative student data. With this approach, educators receive the clearest insight on where a student is relative to his or her peers, their overall education goals, learning targets and standards. By blending together these assessments, teachers are able to tailor learning so that all students reach their highest academic potential.
